Leading Mobile Companies Join Forces to Develop Standards for Voice over LTE via GAN

awards2000There's certainly strength in numbers. Today, a formidable group that includes Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, Kineto Wireless, LG Electronics, Motorola, Nortel, Samsung, Starent Networks, T-Mobile and ZTE, announced the formation of VoLGA Forum and the launch of VoLGA-Forum.com.

The companies formed the VoLGA Forum to focus on a joint effort: "Define a set of specifications for enabling delivery of voice services over LTE access networks based on the current 3GPP Generic Access Network (GAN) standard," also called UMA.

The group said its participants intend to complete and publish the initial set of VoLGA specifications mid-2009. Many eyes will be on them.
